This is happening today. This young man and young woman have been a part of my life for 14 years and I have the privilege and honor to be their stepmother, a title I take very seriously. I still remember them as Cryin’ Ryan and Crazy Cait. These graduating faces are a far cry from the dirt smeared, ketchup crusted beauties that I would pick up at daycare, but the smiles have not changed. They will do great things because they are great people. My advice to them is simple (and mostly learned from their father):
Be the best you can be at whatever you do while still maintaining your happiness and sanity. You don’t have to love what you do if it allows you to do things that you love. Live within your means but splurge every once in a while. Love somebody. See the world. Try new things. Call your mother (and stepmother). Or text. Text is fine. Just be in touch. Be kind. Go to bed early sometimes (Ryan). Stay up late sometimes (Caitlin). Be at peace and be content with the life you create. Share your gifts with the world for you have many.
Please pass the tissues.
